Bungie Delays Destiny 2: The Final Shape Expansion to June

After much speculation and rumors, Bungie has confirmed the delay of their highly anticipated expansion, Destiny 2: The Final Shape, from its original February release to June. This move comes as no surprise, especially after recent reports that Destiny 2 had missed revenue projections by 45 percent last year, leading to significant layoffs for over 100 Bungie employees.

In an official statement, Bungie acknowledged that The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling, and they want to honor that journey. The studio is taking the necessary time to deliver “an even bigger and bolder vision” for the expansion.

The revenue shortfall experienced last year was directly attributed to the unenthusiastic reception to Destiny 2: Lightfall, a previous expansion that failed to deliver meaningful story developments and content. This has put immense pressure on Bungie to ensure that Destiny 2: The Final Shape not only delivers a satisfying end to the storyline but also paves the way for a new phase of the game’s lifespan.

To address the gap in Destiny 2 content caused by the delay, Bungie has announced plans to release additional content from February to June. This includes a smaller content update entitled “Into the Light“, new PvP maps, weekly progression-based quests, the launch of Moments of Triumph, and Guardian Games with a refreshed focus on class vs. class competition.

According to Bungie, the additional content will serve as a build-up to The Final Shape expansion and will prepare players for their Guardian’s journey into the Traveler. The ongoing efforts from the PvP Strike Team will also bring three new PvP maps dropping in May.

With all these developments, Destiny 2 players can expect an exciting lineup of content leading up to The Final Shape expansion. The game is available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. The newly confirmed launch date for The Final Shape expansion is set for June 4, 2024.
